Verle Leavitt
Gunlock
Verle Leavitt, 88, passed away July 21, 2014 at the Southern Utah Veterans Home in Ivins, Utah. He was born May 21, 1926, in St. George, Utah to Samuel Vernon Leavitt and Dartha Luella Barney Leavitt. He married Laura May Madsen Leavitt on October 14, 1949. After over 47 years of marriage, Laura unexpectedly passed away in July 1997 at the age of 65. He then married Arda Pollock in November 1998.
Verle was raised in Gunlock, Utah and attended school in Gunlock and St George. He was a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings. He lived almost all his life in Gunlock. He served in the Army, spending the majority of his service overseas at the end of World War II. Verle worked hard all his life. He was a great example of that. He was a farmer, rancher, trapper, and fishing bait supplier. He did all these things to support a large family. He loved hunting, fishing, playing horseshoes, and spending lots of quality time with his family. He also loved raising a large garden especially tomatoes.
Verle is survived by his wife, Arda; his children: Darwin Leavitt, Ethel Benware (Curtis), Kathy Gentry (Allen H), Hal Leavitt (Betty), Sheldon Leavitt (Mary), Sheila Hunt (Jeff), Sharon Read (Randy), stepchildren: Dale Pollock (Shauna), Sharon Lorraine Thomas (Robert) and Lynn Pollock, 43 grandchildren; and 50 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters, Rose McAllister and Jeri Sullivan. He was preceded in death by his parents; eight siblings; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 26, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. at the Gunlock LDS Ward Chapel, 733 N. Main St., Gunlock, Utah. Visitations will be held Friday, July 25, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Metcalf Mortuary, 288 West St. George Blvd., St. George and on Saturday, prior to services, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Chapel.
