Leila Barber Sullivan Obituary

Leila Barber Sullivan

St George – Leila Barber Sullivan departed this life on Feb. 1, 2018, leaving behind a legacy of love, compassion and service. She was the eighth child born of Frank and Sarah Ida Webb Barber on March 30, 1927. Losing her mother when she was only two years old she was raised by her Father in Hurricane, Utah.

Leila attended schools in Hurricane, graduating from Hurricane High School with lots of good memories and friends that she stayed close to through the years. She attended a year at Dixie College where she met Hal Sullivan from Leeds. They were married in the St. George LDS Temple on June 12, 1946. They were the parents of Clark, Jillyn, Joyce and Bruce, (Lori, stillborn).

Leila loved her family. She loved bringing them together with her love, lemon meringue pies, cakes (every Sunday evening), her potato salad, gummy bears and Swedish fish in the candy drawer. She remembered and acknowledged everyone’s birthday. I mean EVERYONE’S as in the whole town of St. George and beyond. She always had something to give, either food, money or advice and she couldn’t be refused. Her house was the softest place to land not only for her kids, but the grandkids and all their friends (well, actually, everyone was welcome).

She loved serving in the St. George Temple and working at the Market Basket, and Dixie College Bookstore which she did for 29 years and cherished the many friendships from these places. No matter the pain or circumstance, her day started with “…whom can I serve today?”. She loved her days of refurnishing furniture with Montrue. She always enjoyed a good book or an old movie but not until her scriptures were read and her journal entry done… but her true hobby was compassionate service. She carried that with her to The Meadows Assisted Living where she continued to love the staff and residents there.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her siblings: brothers, Webb, Ralston, Keith, and Garth; sisters, LaRue Heaton, Ruth Cannon and Beulah Isom; her husband Hal, her daughter Lori, her son Clark, and her son-in-law Scott Wells. She is survived by Sheryl, daughter-in-law (Clark deceased), Jillyn Wells Reber (Randy), Joyce Webb (Jay), and Bruce (Gaye); 19 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Leila Barber Sullivan… we say good-bye… but JUST FOR NOW.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 10, 2018, 11:00 a.m. at the St. George 5th and 6th Ward Chapel, 85 S. 400 E., St. George, UT. There will be a viewing Friday, February 9, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Spilsbury Mortuary, 110 S. Bluff, St. George and prior to services Saturday from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the Church. I’m getting married on May 26 in Pine Valley.  I’m going to marry Randy Reber.  We met many years ago when he would come to St. George to visit his grandma in the 1960’s and Stef and I would go and play games with him and his brothers.  When we were old enough to date, he’d get his grandma’s Mustang convertible and we’d go out.  We went our separate ways, each of us marrying our high school sweethearts.  We both found ourselves “single” after all these years and his mother, Josephine Reber hooked us up last summer and that’s pretty much the story.  He’s from northern California and we’ll reside in both places until he can establish his painting business here.

I’ve been widowed now for 7 years and it’s the pits but I have  been blessed with a great family and they are my life, especially those little grandkids.  I have twelve, six of them are in the St. George area and I’m lovin’ it.  I’ll give you the rundown on my family.

My oldest son, Kyle, got his Ph.D. frm the U of U and is a professor at Dixie College.  He and his wife JoEllen have three children.  My second son, Spencer is a Doctor, graduated from University of Louisville and is doing his residency in Anesthesiology in Louisville where he has two more years and then wants to return to Southern Utah.  He and his wife Shana have four children.  My 3rd son, Mason just graduated from the University of Louisville and is a dentist practicing with the Hurricane Dental Group in Hurricane.  He and Mandy have three children.  My daughter, Lauri graduated from BYU with a degree in Psychology and is heading to Mexico for a semester to do a post-graduate field study through BYU.  Traci, my youngest is married to Russ Staheli and they live in West Bountiful.  She teaches dance through the Virginia Tanner Dance Studio in Bountiful and Russ is working on a Master’s Degree through the University of North Carolina.  They have two little sons.

I served a mission to Church headquarters in Salt Lake working in the Translation Department.  I’m currently preparing to put my papers in again as soon as I see what my un-married daugfhter is going to do with her life.  Looks like I need to hook her up with Paul’s son.  I worked at Dixie College teaching in their computer lab but took a leave (actually, I quit) to do some traveling with friends (visiting Janet in China) and making my many trips each year to see my grand kids still in Kentucky.  I just don’t have time to work.  That’s about it.  I knit, and tend grandkids and travel.  Check out my blog for information about me (and my family.
